Family mediation is NOT therapy and should never be confused with the possible medical need for therapy, nor can it take the place thereof. Mediation may, however, often serve to reach a place that therapy cannot -- a simple, quick, solution to a pressing family problem.

Mediation is at its strongest in enhancing communications between parties, promoting understanding and seeking a mutually acceptable resolution to a disupte or problem.

 What kinds of problems?Almost too many to list. But ....

The management of children's issues among divorced couples is a area designed for mediation. Visitation, for example, is often fraught with confusion, anger and frustration. Rather than bringing this "to the lawyers" (at $300+ an hour for each side, plus billing to pick up the phone, make a copy, make a filing in court, attend the hearing, submit a legal memorandum, etc.), it can be far, far more efficient to mediate the matter. With reasonable parties determined to come to a solution -- or endure months and months of confusion while litigation proceeds -- they can resolve the matter in hours.Education decisions, recreation decisions, custody, changes of financial situation ... all are perfect for mediation.

Other family issues, too. Does your teenager not understand the boudaries of car use? Internet use in your family an issue? Chores and manners? Can't talk to your Mom, or Son? A sensible dress code? Any resolution to these problems can make mediation fees seem inexpensive.  Or even cheap at the price.

It may seem odd, but the mere formality of mediation premits parties to say things that they might otherwise hide, and listen in ways that promote understanding. All of which tend to make people's lives richer and less stressful.You might think that people should be able to do this for themselves within their families, but the sheer number of disfunctional families would indicate otherwise. Mediation is a very powerful tool indeed, to hear and be heard.

Family businesses also present as excellent areas for mediation. Too often personalities are tied up with history and other considerations, all of which are detrimental to the health of a family business. Traditional respect may prevent valuable input and fraternal goals may tear a firm apart. Mediation may clarify these issues and promote decision made in the best interests of all parties.
